When we got the virtual sketch date picture I had charcoal in hand, so I went straight to sketching. I never did get back to it and yesterday when I should have posted, I had a trojan horse and a wonderful impromptu party.
This morning I woke up early and decide to give the flower one more quick try before I posted. This is ATC sized, colour pencil on drafting film.
You can check out the rest of the virtual sketch date participants on the new blog that Rose set up. The reference photo was provided by Jennifer.

Hi Paulette!
ReplyDeleteThe colored picture looks like satin! Make me want to touch it!
How do you like the drafting film, as opposed to a paper surface?
Very nice Paulette, I love the texture on the petals!
ReplyDeleteI'll update the post with the links to include yours right now.
Thanks for joining in.
Paulette, I love the immediacy of the charcoal drawing and how you managed to keep that freshness in the colored version as well. I hope your computer problems are resolved now.
ReplyDeleteLeslie,
ReplyDeleteI like the drafting film quite a bit, it has a smooth surface to draw on. It's fall back is that if you are heavy handed it only takes a couple of colours.
Rose,
Thank you!
Stacy,
Thank you. All is good now. :P
Nice sketches, especially the coloured one. I must try and get some drafting film to try - the boss used to have it, but they do everything on computer now!
ReplyDeleteSorry you had problems. I like them both for different reasons. I like the graphite because it is loose. I tend to sketch very tight and can't do "loose". The colored one is very nice and bright. I have seen so many things on drafting film. I have never tried it before but is definitely something I should try.
ReplyDelete2 Lovely sketches! :D really nice sense of life in the charcoal one and nice silky looking petals in the one done with CPs :)
ReplyDeleteThe charcoal gives a nice loose impression and the colour really makes the ATC pop!
ReplyDeleteHi Kay,
ReplyDeleteThank you! I find the drafting film gives a different quality to your drawings, so it is worth checking out.
Hello Jeanne,
My sketching, I think, tends to be very loose, it is only when I plan everything to the nth degree that I pull it together. Do try the drafting film.
Thank you Jennifer!
Hi Jeanette,
Thank you!
Hi Paulette,
ReplyDeleteLove the depth and subtle colors in the petals. Does colored pencil go on film easily?
Hi Teresa,
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Yes the film takes the colour pencil very easily. It only takes a few layers, so you either have to be very light handed or have a good idea of what colours you need to get the results you want. The clear aspect is interesting too, it allows you to add colour on the other side, or use a coloured paper to back it up.
This is so beautiful! I'd been thinking about trying the drafting film thing, and I think you've decided me :) I love the dimension you found in the flower, too- seems like it's about to fall right off the page.
