Llama.....

I haven't done a pencil drawing in ages! This one is 4x6, graphite on stonehenge.

I know this llama is female, she is probably pregnant and I am not sure on her name. Llamas have one year gestation periods! The matriarch of the group is pregnant and has passed 13 months already. When my cousin talked to the vet, she found out that the older llamas can take as long as 18months to have their babies!

Maple syrup......

I ran a weekly challenge at Drawspace this week. I based it on my trip to Northern Michigan, where I visited my Cousin. They were in the process of collecting sap to make syrup. My Cousin's Father in Law worked the evaporator, kept the fire going and watching the temperature on the syrup. He was able to explain to my younger boys and myself the whole process. The boys helped out with all the different jobs. Then we were able to bring home a jug of syrup.

Robofest....

My son William was in a robotics competition last night, Robofest. His team won and made it to the world finals, which luckily for him is right next door in Michigan.
It made for a great place to do some sketching. While William never seemed to be in a good place to sketch, the one little boy on the team sat still for a while. My husband Jim, a coach, stood watching the kids so I was able to get him in in bits on the right.

The same little boy and one of the Moms from another team. The team was huddled around the playing field and I thought I would be able to sketch them but they moved around too much. I should have brought another sketch book or some blank paper. I didn't want to fill up my sketch journal but could have easily sketched for quite a bit longer and at different times during the day.

Boot camp......

Let's Make Art has started a Boot Camp.

Ten to twenty minutes of exercise a day - five days a week. That's what it takes to keep in shape!

Well I have the ten to twenty down, now to just get that 5 days a week in. The first week I did two days, the second I did one day, the third I did 4 days, and this week I have 2 so far.

Just before I got the invite to join Boot Camp, I found a great sale on some moleskin sketch books. That gave me the perfect opportunity to get started right away. It also allowed me to try out a journal of sorts. I love what Dee Farnsworth does with the weather report. There are some others that I love too, I'll find some to show next time I show my sketches.

Prehistoric trading cards....

Well their not great... I should have said no to this trade, but I was on such a good run. I had several sketches done and ready to do, but every time I took them out I just stared at them. I think I had ATC burn out. Jim suggested I should do cave painting, they'll be easy, ha! I talked him into doing them with me since I had no ambition to do this. We found out that those simple looking stick figures actually have beautiful sweeping lines and graceful curves. Not easy to do on a 2.5x3.5 card. I can't imagine how they did it on rock walls!
I am responsible for the funny looking rock walls that are in the background. I did them with oil pastels, something new to try and a quick way to put down a lot of colour. Jim did the three hunting scenes and I did the two on black.
Jim did the cards with dinosaur bones, one in oil pastel and one with a white conte pencil. while he did that I tried a cave painting of my own design on sand paper. I used a picture of a deer from our backyard, maybe not true cave painting style as you can see the face, but it was fun to play.

Hey I missed my Blog Birthday....

I have been blogging for one year, as of two days ago! Here is my original post.

Well first it means that you have to learn how to spell renaissance. Which I have now done enough times to remember...after looking it up three times to triple check how to spell it!
Next it means picking out the meaning for Renaissance Woman that you like and can agree too. For example ... a young woman who is dominated by her father until she is passed into marriage, at which point she is to be loyal to her husband and produce boys... until death do us part! Well, that is not exactly the picture I had in mind. Although my father did keep a tight reign on me, as the only girl in a household of boys. And... I am loyal to my husband and...I did produce 4 boys. I guess it's just not said in a way that I can appreciate...domination and all that...ugh!
What I did have in mind was...A woman who has broad intellectual interests and is accomplished in areas of both the arts and the sciences. Now that's more like it!
Next is the fun part gather all that knowledge and use it!
This is where the blog comes in. I am absolutely certain that a renaissance woman, from whatever century, would have her journey written out. Of course in this century that means a blog!
Happy Birthday Dear Blog!

Tripod....

The star of our virtual sketch is Jeanette's cat Tripod. I have seen Tripod sketched many a time by Jeanette so it was fun to give him a try myself.
My contour sketch was done completely by eye and my final drawing was done by getting a couple of key spots first.

Here are all the drawings, you have to go check them out. It is great fun to see all the different styles.

Sketching....

Just a fast sketch for the challenge over at DS. I am the host this week and this is my Husbands hand. I think I picked some good pictures for everyone to work on. Lot's of light and shadows.

I got my self in on a virtual sketch with Jeanette, Rose, Jeanne, Stacy, Belinda, Jennifer, Katherine, Gayle and Teresa. Jeanette has sent us all a photo to sketch or draw. I got started today, with a contour drawing. Not sure what I will do but for now I have a feel for my subject. The drawings will be posted on May 18th.

Spring Swimmers....

My 9yr old son and his friends agreed to stay still for a couple minutes at a time while they were swimming this weekend. They even did a couple of poses for me. The water was 60F so they weren't doing much swimming just egging each other on to jump in the pool.
I darkened the lines with a black pencil so you could see them.

First Challenge at the New Let's Make Art.....

Joanie is running the challenge for the first part of May. With her pictures she also included a portrait by Rembrandt of his father. She challenged us to try to copy it. I decide to go for that one with a quick sketch.

Self portrait.....

Jeanette, over at Illustrated Life, set up a portrait challenge with a twist , over at Drawspace. This is my line drawing for it. I know I'm scarier looking than you all thought I would be.LOL The twist was that it should not be the average view of yourself. I think I fulfilled that! I did cheat a bit, I posterized the picture I was working from. My inspiration level has been low so I wanted to just jump in and get going. This was still about an hours worth of work.

Eye....

Eye
3.5"x2.5"
Graphite on film

This was a challenge on drawspace. I tried out using graphite on film to see what I think. I think I am not liking it, although I don't feel that I worked as fine and light as what I would have needed to.

Cats Eyes....

I have been having a slump in my drawings lately. The challenge this week really inspired me to give it a try. I am very pleased with how it turned out.

I had/have a pair of cats named Little Johnny and Big Buck. Males you think? Nope... these used cats came with their names and even though they are female we decided to leave them as is. We only added big and little so we can tell them apart. These cats are amazingly friendly. Everyone who came into the house was put into service... petting them!

Little Johnny died about two months ago. We sometimes called her Johnny Hurt Me, because she wanted to be rubbed rather vigorously. You could lift her up by her tail and she would purr all the louder. We figure that she (and her sister) was about 13 years old. Not a bad life.

Big Buck is still with us, as spry as ever. She likes to wait till the house is quiet then meow until she gets a good echo off of the ceilings. Luckily she has a short attention span! Big Buck will let Bob maul her, by the time she says she has had enough she is quite wet. Personally I think she goes and grooms after, he wets the spots that she couldn't get to. She is not to sure about the puppy yet. She is giving Gracie trial meetings... checking the grooming potential?

Portraits...

Learning to draw a portrait is one of the most difficult things to do. I mean I can map everything out and take 30 or 40 hours and come up with a great portrait with a good likeness. I can after all see Jim looking out at me in his portrait, his lips, his eyes, yup it's him.

What is really hard is to take a person or photograph and do a quick sketch of them . Not only do you have to follow the laws of nature...the face does follow certain patterns after all, you have to capture the essence of the person you are drawing. The thing that makes their face unique from the other 6 billion people on the planet.

Now I will have to apologize to these beautiful ladies. I do feel that I captured some of their look, but I don't think their Mom's will call for copies! Now I have heard one of these ladies say "practice, practice, practice". So back to the sketch pad for me, because I would so love to be able to whip off a sketch of someone and have it be recognizable.

Heroes...

Have you ever thought of who your hero would be? On a drawing forum there was a challenge to draw your hero. Well that might be easier said than done. I for one had never given it any thought. I of course have people I admire, people who do amazing things. Fire fighters who save people, doctors, nurses, fathers and mothers who put food on the table...I mean if you start thinking about it we are surrounded by heroes. People who go above and beyond the call to duty. People who persevere through great obstacles. Some we will know about and most we won't.
Since I didn't know at the time who my hero was, I went looking. How did I look? I Google searched of course! Canadian heroes...I decide to pick the one that meant something to my life. This is Dr. Fredrick Banting, he is the one that had the light bulb moment that led to the discovery of insulin. He and his team won the Nobel prize for their discovery.
Now how does this affect my life? My Mother in law has diabetes. If insulin was not discovered, she would probably not be here. Her mother died giving birth due to diabetes. Hilda has five wonderful boys (men) one of whom is my husband. The handsome guy to the side!
I think it is not who is my favorite hero, it is who is the hero on top of the hero list today? I do believe you don't have far to look to find a hero in your life.

Drawing...

I belong to a website called Drawspace. This is an artists forum dedicated to teaching everyone how to draw. Brenda Hoddinott is the very talented lady who brings this site to us. She has more than 100 lessons available from beginner to advanced. On a regular basis she also adds more lessons for us to do . Like this adorable Emma Emu, above.

My philosophy on teaching art is to focus primarily
on the enjoyment aspects while gently introducing
the technical and academic. Hence, in creating a
passion for the subject matter, the quest for
knowledge also becomes enjoyable.
>Brenda Hoddinott<

Along with these lessons, there is a wonderful forum with people from all around the world. This community of artist is the perfect compliment to Brenda's lessons. We encourage and help each other through the learning process. We also do weekly challenges and some classes to help us learn.

If you think there is an artist inside of you or you just want your doodles to look better this is the place to start. This renaissance woman did just that and is having a blast.

Kids...

There was a topic on the radio today.... this lady wrote a book saying that it was unfair to parents, to not tell them that life with children wasn't going to be all roses and lemon drops. That society was setting up parents especially stay at home Moms for a big disappointment. I would like to know what dream land she lives in. She never met a Mom with the grand canyon under her eyes because precious doesn't sleep? She never had a parent say they had another activity to go to? Does she have no recollection of her childhood? Is her own job never boring? Do her husband and herself have a perfect marriage day in and day out? That anyone can go into childrearing without first asking do I really want to take on this responsibility is amazing!

I have four boys they are wonderful, boisterous, fun loving, terrors and I can't imagine life without them....well actually I could! It would be quite and serene, my husband and I could stare into each others eyes for...hours! The toilet would be clean! The bills would be lower! I could have a full set of dishes and utensils! I wouldn't have to share the computer as much! I could afford to travel! Wow the list does go on.

Of course the other list does too! No screams of joy when the kids come off the bus, race into the house (and slam the door in the others ones face), shouting I'm home! No precious little hand prints in cement stepping stones (and on the wall) on Mother's day. No eureka moment when lacing shoes (for the thousandth time) and he gets it. No proud moment when you realize that you don't have to worry, your child does have friends, good ones. No one climbing into your bed, because "it's better, I'll get out when you need it". No "look Mom!" for every jump, flip, dive and every crazy thing he does. That your secretly thinking If I don't see it he can't get hurt. No little fingers twiddling your hair, while they tell you of their grand ideas. I could go on and on with this list.
See...can't live without them. I am sure a renaissance woman would have a nanny. Me, I go on vacation for that other stuff!
